    Series Information

The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) has been set up by the Government of India in 1950 to collect socio-economic data employing scientific sampling methods. The NSSO conducts regular surveys as part of its “rounds”, each round being normally of a year's duration and covering more than one subject of study. The surveys are conducted through household interviews, using a random sample of households covering practically the entire geographical area of the country.

The Governing Council of the NSSO decided to collect information on Utilisation of Medical Services along with Survey on persons aged 60 years and above in the 42nd Round Schedule 25.7. The field operations of the 42nd NSS round commenced on 1st July 1986 and continued up to June, 1987. The field work for the survey was conducted, as usual, by the Field Operations Division of the Organisation. The collected data were processed by the Data Processing Division of NSSO and tabulated by the Computer Centre of Department of Statistics.

    Abstract

The 42nd round Schedule 25.7 was devoted to an enquiry on 'Utilisation of Medical Srevices'. The objective was to make an assessment of the benefits derived by various sections of the society in the utilisation of Medical Services provided by the Government of India. As the largest share of expenditure on social services goes to the area of education and health care, this enquiry was devoted mainly to the collection of informations and extent of their utilisation of Medical Services. This survey was conducted during July 1986-June 1987.

In the absence of an electronic copy of 'manual of instructions to the filed staff', more details could not be furnished.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

Basic sample design was stratified two stage with census villages and urban blocks as the first stage unit in rural and urban sectors respectively and house holds as the second stage units in both sectors. While the villages were selected with probability proportional to population with replacement, the sample blocks were selected by simple random sampling without replacemet (both in the form of two independet sub samples). The househlds listed in the sample villages or block divided in to two sub-strata; sub-stratum-1 consisting of households with one or more members enrolled at post-primary level, and sub-stratum- 2 of all the remaining households. These sample households were selectted circular systematically with the the random start from each sub-stratum (six households in all)

In the absence of an electronic/hard copy of the 'Sampling design and estimation procedure' details could not be provided

    Deviations from the Sample Design

There was no deviation from the original sampling design

    Weighting

Sample weights were calculated and included in each of the data files
Multipliers for Sub-stratum -1, sub-stratum-2 and Combined have been computed and posted in the data.

Variable 'Wgt_SS-1' refers to Multiplier for each Sub-stratum 1.
Variable 'Wgt_SS-2' refers to Multiplier for each Sub-stratum 2.
Variable 'Wgt_Combined' refers to Combined Multiplier.

    Survey instrument

    Questionnaires

Schedule 25.7 consists of the following blocks:

    Methodology notes

There are many fields in the data sets defined as alpha numeric but they are supposed to contain NUMERIC values as they are amount field. Some of their values as ALPHA such as "NL"or "xx" and signifies the code of employer etc. Therefore, while processing care should be taken to convert those fields for numeric values and interpret ALPHA in conjuction to the code provided in the next field.
