Assets held for the purpose of producing or providing goods or services and not for resale in the normal course of entrepreneurial activities are classified as fixed assets. The distinguishing feature of a fixed asset is not that it is durable in some physical sense, but that it may be used repeatedly or continuously in production over a long period of time, which is taken to be more than one year. These cover all goods, new or used, that have a normal economic life of more than one year from the date of purchase. Fixed assets include not only structures, machinery and equipment but also intellectual property products such as softwares or artistic originals that are used in production. It may be noted that the assets to be considered here are assets of the enterprise. Hence, if owner of a proprietary enterprise has made some investments (like NSC, PPF, etc.) in her/his personal capacity, these will not be considered here.
