From ASI 2010-11 onwards, the survey is being conducted annually under the statutory provisions of the Collection of Statistics (COS) Act, 2008 (as amended in 2017) and the rules framed there-under in 2011. ASI 2022-23, data collected from establishments relate to theirrespective accounting years that ended on any day between 1st April 2022 and 31st March 2023. Survey was conducted during November 2023 to June 2024.
The primary unit of enumeration in the survey is a factory in the case of manufacturing industries, a workshop in the case of repair services, an undertaking or a licensee in the case of electricity, gas and water supply undertakings and an establishment in the case of bidi and cigar industries. The owner of two or more establishments located in the same state, same sector (bidi, factory or electricity) and pertaining to the same industry group (3-digit industry code) falling under the census scheme is, however, permitted to furnish a single consolidated return, termed as 'Joint Return (JR)'.
